Hot AIR Application Contest for Philadelphia Flash Platform to coincide with On AIR Bus Tour Stop

I mentioned in my previous entry about the On AIR Bus Tour stopping in Philadelphia, that I was organizing a contest to coincide with the event and was in the midst of nailing down details on the prizes and judging. Well the details all came together yesterday afternoon and I updated the entry. I'm posting this separate entry to make sure the word gets out with the latest info. So here are the additional details about our mini AIR application contest:

Contest Name
Hot AIR (What else?)

Judging
In addition to myself, Derek Wischusen, and Mark Belsterling, now Mike Chambers and the rest of the on AIR Bus Tour riders will be assisting in the judging of our Hot AIR application contest on originality, execution/technical merit, utilization of AIR features, overall experience, aesthetics and of course "hotness". ;)

Prizes
Adobe is also providing some pretty cool prizes for the winners:
  • The Grand Prize winner will receive a Copy of Flex Builder 2 and One Nintendo DS Lite with a copy of Super Mario World
  • The top three entries, will receive an O'Reilly "Ultimate AIR Developer" book bundle (bundle titles/description)
  • All the winners will get a chance to demo their app at the event!

Pretty cool overall - so first off, register for the event, then if you are not already a member of our group, sign up as a member, download a copy of AIR and get to working on your best application. Then submit a link to your .air file no later than midnight August 20th, 2007 to be eligible for the contest.

Any questions or concerns, feel free to drop me a note.

Adobe on AIR Bus Tour 2007 Coming to Philadelphia August 22 - REGISTER NOW and Contest Info

I just returned from a week long trip to California where in addition to visiting some clients, I also attended the Adobe Community Summit 2007 event for Adobe User Group Managers and Adobe Community Experts, and one of the highlights of the event that I posted last week about on my personal site, was the unveiling of the plans for the Adobe on AIR Bus Tour 2007. What is AIR? AIR is the official name for what was previously only known by its code name: Apollo. AIR is an acronym for "Adobe Integrated Runtime". A perfect description of the melding of Flash, HTML/JavaScript and PDF technologies into one runtime environment designed to allow you to take your web applications and give them their own desktop environment. So I am really excited that the bus tour is going to be stopping in Philadelphia on August 22nd, to give us all the lowdown, tips, tricks and info on building Apollo/AIR, applications and taking advantage of this new technology where we can leverage our existing skills.

I was even able to provide some input on the final selection of the venue for the Philadelphia stop: The Fels Planetarium in the Franklin Institute and have been excited about this for weeks now as a result - I've been busting at the seams, wanting to share more info about this event. :) For those of you locals who have been to the Franklin Institute before, you know what a great venue it is, and there are some pretty cool things planned for the event (Can you say XBOX 360 and Nintendo WII on the giant 4 story tall planetarium dome screen?) It's the third leg of the tour so more details will be coming out in the next few months, but our group, along with the new Philadelphia Area Flex User Group and possibly the local ColdFusion User Group will have a booth/table and there might be a couple other surprises. ;) Last week, I got a chance to stop by and visit with some friends, including Mike Chambers at the Adobe Offices in San Francisco and caught a sneak peak of some of the other aspects of the tour that Mike is planning, and I think everyone will really get a kick out of all the cool stuff he has in the works. Mike has already posted about several of the cool technology aspects of the bus tour including GPS data, and API's to retrieve information from the bus as it makes its trek across the country from stop to stop. There is even a live webcam(s) that will be documenting life on the bus when the tour kicks off in a couple weeks. Mike has also been detailing the entire process of building the site and the planning that has been going into the tour via a special blog, and even a dedicated twitter feed to allow you to keep up to date with everything that is going on.

Please make sure that if you plan on attending to register NOW as many of the stops including Philadelphia are already up to 50% full and there has been very little marketing put out up till now, it was only just announced last week on Monday and you can expect a big push of other marketing to come out soon. Please make sure you also visit the on AIR Bus Tour 2007 site for more detailed info and the scoop on other locations, dates and times. If you aren't in Philly there are several other local stops on the east coast in the 2nd and third legs of the tour.

i also wanted to point out a link to a recent Infoworld article by Paul Krill on AIR where myself and several other Adobe User Group Managers were interviewed and asked about our opinions and thoughts on Adobe AIR.

Finally, I am organizing a contest to coincide with the festivities of the on AIR Bus Tour stop in Philadelphia. Anyone who is a member of our local group (to become a member simply signup here) is invited to develop and submit their best AIR application using the latest AIR runtime available from http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/. Submissions will be judged by myself, Derek Wischusen, and Mark Belsterling on originality, execution/technical merit, and overall experience/aesthetics. We may have some other special judges involved, and I'm working on the prize(s) specifics at the moment, but besides getting your winning AIR applications highlighted here, I can almost guarantee that you will also get a few minutes to demo your AIR app at the on AIR Bus Tour stop here in Philadelphia on August 22nd. How does that sound? Right now the only rules are, you must be a member of our group, and you'll need to submit a link to your AIR (.air) file for us to review no later than midnight on August 20th, 2007. I'll have more info on the exact prizes soon.

Also, if thats not enough of an incentive to get you developing AIR apps, check out the INCREDIBLE prizes that Adobe is offering to AIR developers in their AIR Developer Derby - truly amazing prizes they are offering - check it out!

I'll be posting more info here and on my personal site about the event as the tour progresses and gets closer to Philadelphia.
